Algernon Henry Blackwood was born on March 14, 1869 in Shooters Hill. His father was a post office administrator. After completing his studies at Willington College, he went on to pursue various career paths, including journalism in New York for various magazines.
At the age of approximately thirty, he went back to England to write horror stories. He composed more than a hundred short stories, fourteen novels, an autobiographical volume called ‘Episodes Before Thirty’, and several children’s books and plays that have not been published or produced. It achieved various success and several critics dedicated several pages to it. He was present on both radio and TV and created the character of John Silence, a detective with psychic abilities. He holds the distinction of being one of the creators of the ‘occult detective’ genre for this character. In the 1940s, he first made an appearance on a BBC television show where he read ghost stories to the public before his death on December 10, 1951.
